Beginner Projects

I wanted to put a little post up front here before the list of tutorial links below to recommend a few nice 'first time' Fair Isle knitting projects. The easiest pattern to begin with is a ski headband like the one to the left (Never Knit Your Man a Sweater Until You've Got the Ring). Using a variegated yarn for the background color gives the illusion that you've used more than two colors. You can also buy a kit that includes a pattern and yarn from Bea Ellis. I've also recently discovered a nice pillow pattern book from Dale of Norway (book 119) which is based on knitting in the round, no steeks, no shaping, and very easy pattern repeats that should make it very fun for the beginner. And when you are ready to work on double pointed needles, Nancy Bush has a wonderful mitten pattern for beginners, Meida's Mittens, from her book Folk Knitting in Estonia. Only the cuff is done in two colors so you don't have to worry about any shaping in pattern.
